Strategies for Aligning Actions with Desires

How often do you coach someone who claims to be committed to change, yet consistently finds excuses not to take the necessary steps? They show up each week, eager to make progress, leave the session feeling motivated, but by the time they return, nothing has changed. Week after week, they remain baffled by what’s blocking their progress. Often, it’s their underlying beliefs that are holding them back. Like all of us, their beliefs are so ingrained that they can’t see, let alone address, what’s really standing in their way.

When a client is stuck in a cycle of inaction, exploring the following three critical beliefs and their related questions can help uncover what’s blocking them and guide them in determining how to respond:

  1. Beliefs about Possibility: Do they truly believe their goal can become a reality?

    • Ask: How strongly do you believe that what you desire is achievable?

  1. Beliefs about Capability: Do they feel capable of making it happen?

    • Ask: How confident are you in your ability to acquire the necessary skills or resources to achieve your goal?

  1. Beliefs about Probability: Do they believe that the benefits of change will outweigh the costs?

    • Ask: How much do you trust that your efforts will pay off in the end?

How a client answers these questions usually reveals which belief needs to be addressed first, second, and third, and to what extent. One belief often overshadows the others, and when brought to light, the remaining barriers become less daunting, making options and actions more accessible and attainable.
