ICF Coaching Competency Labs
Knowing the coaching competencies is one thing.
Recognizing what they ask of you in the middle of a real conversation is another.
Coaching competencies can look straightforward on paper. In practice, they require discernment. When do you stay with something? When do you challenge? When does a question create discovery—and when does it subtly lead? When are you partnering with the client, and when have you unknowingly taken responsibility for where the conversation goes?

In the ICF Coaching Competency Labs, you’ll move beyond understanding the competencies conceptually and explore how they show up in actual coaching. Through demonstration, practice, observation, feedback, and reflection, you’ll develop greater awareness of not only what you are doing as a coach, but what your coaching is making possible for the client.

In these labs, you’ll build and refine your ability to:
-
Recognize ICF competencies and markers as they occur naturally within a coaching conversation
-
Discern the difference between demonstrating a coaching skill and using it in service of the client
-
Notice when your own assumptions, expertise, or desire to help may be influencing the direction of the conversation
-
Strengthen your ability to partner, listen, respond, and create space for client-generated awareness and choice
-
Use observation and feedback to identify both what is working and where another coaching choice might create something different
Come ready to coach, observe, experiment, and be coached. Leave with a deeper understanding of the competencies—and greater choice in how you bring them to life.
