How many of your employees or clients are stuck chasing outcomes that feel forever out of reach? They long to control what they can’t, and when it doesn’t go their way, they tap out—convinced it’s an all-or-nothing game.
But here’s the thing: it only becomes a no-win game because they show up without a strategy. They let the chips fall, someone else picks them up, plays the hand, and wins. And rather than seeing how their choices shaped the outcome, they cling to the belief that “someone else was just luckier, more chosen, or better positioned.”
Desire drives action—but when the desire one is clinging to is out of their control, what can you do?
Rather than fixating on what can’t change or directly reminding individuals that they can only alter what is within their control, ask:
What do you want to ensure never gets out of control, no matter what’s happening?
What part of self do you want to preserve or strengthen despite the chaos?
Who or what matters most to protect?
What in this environment can you maintain—or even improve?
What story do you want others to see in your actions or decisions?
When we lean into the discomfort, dread becomes a tool—not a trap. It forces us to define what we refuse to lose, what values we’ll defend, and how we’ll show up even in the worst circumstances.
From there, we can build a parallel desire—one that motivates progress, shapes bold strategies, and sparks innovation. It’s not about winning the game as it is; it’s about redefining the game altogether.
So, ask yourself: "What isn't worth losing, no matter the stakes?" This question will surely help define the game that you, your team, or your clients are actually playing and assist in developing a strategy to win.
