There are a wide variety of definitions for what coaching is and how it is used. The one we find effective and embrace begins with the belief that coaching is a partnership relationship. The client is the expert in their life. They have the answers within them. We are simply there to ask questions that take them below the surface so that they can source answers that have meaning and will motivate them to embrace change. We do this by raising the client's awareness of how they are responding to themselves and the world around them. We connect them to their values so their steps align with who they are and who they are becoming. And, we champion them towards their goals so that they don't lose energy or sight of where they are headed.
We have five underlying beliefs that are at the heart the coach-client relationship.
- People prefer to be stretched and challenged.
- People are more accepting of their own decisions.
- People learn best through self-discovery.
- People hunger for an accountability partner.
- People have a purpose in life and at a deeper level want to manifest it.
Transformation occurs when the client's awareness is heightened, alternative perspectives are explored and a conscious path of action is taken. This emerges in its own time and own way. It cannot be rushed, predetermined, or guided in a certain direction. When the client is allowed to choose how, when and what for him or herself it becomes part of who they are not just another task to complete.
Coach's Role
- Create a partnership relationship with your client. They are the expert in their life and you are there to support them as they move forward
- Focus on the future not the past.
- Help clients invent possibilities, lots of possibilities
- Connect the client to choices that honor their values.
- Be aware of the unseen as well as the seen.
- Define a broad vision and embrace it together.
- Trust the process. There is a beginning, middle and end to coaching and when you follow it works.
- Cultivate an attitude of curiosity. With history comes assumptions, challenge yourself to be inquisitive. Look and listen for new insight and resourcefulness.
- Ask questions of real worth-ask questions you do not know the answer to. Once you start asking questions you do know the answer to you take away the power of the client and you become the expert.
- Honor and celebrate achievements. It takes many small steps to get to large dreams-Acknowledge all steps along the way.
- Encourage the client’s unique contributions.
- Engage in conversations that matter. Go beyond the surface.
